Abstract

This study aims to explore the understanding of science teachers in junior high schools about scientific literacy, provide training for them and then look again at changes in science teachers' understanding of scientific literacy after being given training. The result shows that science teachers did not have the in-depth knowledge and understanding about Scientific Literacy before attending training. This could be seen in the data from the initial questionnaire where the science teachers gave non holistic and deep answers related to the learning process based on scientific literacy. However, after attending the two-day training, the science teachers were able to understand that 1) Scientific Literacy is one of the important skills in the 21st century skills that students must master 2) Scientific Literacy is in the realm of HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) hence students need to develop the skill to analyze and connect scientific concepts to evaluate social problems in everyday life. In addition, science teachers have also been able to identify several learning activities that can be taken to increase students' scientific literacy. The subsequent research could be undertaken by considering the development of teaching approach that relies on scientific literacy to help the science teachers increase student’s scientific literacy.
